Past Simple

Usar para:

Ejemplos:

  • I walked to the shop. (completed action)
  • She opened the door and smiled. (sequence)
  • The phone rang at 3 p.m. (specific time)

Past Continuous

Usar para:

  • Acciones en curso en el pasado
  • Actividades de fondo
  • Acciones interrumpidas
  • Acciones paralelas en curso
  • Crear escenas/atmósfera

Ejemplos:

  • I was walking to the shop. (in progress)
  • She was reading when I called. (background)
  • It was raining all afternoon. (ongoing)
  • The children were playing outside. (atmosphere)

Patrón Narrativo:

Past Continuous (fondo) + Past Simple (evento principal)

• "While I was cooking dinner, the phone rang."

• "She was studying when her friends arrived."

• "It was snowing heavily when we left the house."

• "The children were sleeping when the storm started."

Acciones Paralelas (ambas en curso):

Past Continuous + Past Continuous

• "While Dad was watching TV, Mum was reading."

• "The children were playing while the adults were talking."

• "I was cooking whilst she was setting the table."

Eventos Secuenciales (uno tras otro):

Past Simple + Past Simple

• "I woke up, had breakfast, and left for work."

• "She opened the letter, read it, and smiled."

• "We arrived at the station, bought tickets, and boarded the train."

Duración vs Punto en el Tiempo:

Past Simple: "I worked all day."

La llegada es rápida (Simple), irse podría estar en curso (Continuous)

❌ "I was going to the shop and was buying milk."

✅ "I went to the shop and bought milk."

Las acciones completadas secuenciales usan Past Simple

❌ "Yesterday at 3 p.m., I started working."

✅ "Yesterday at 3 p.m., I was working."

Actividad en progreso en momento específico usa Continuous
