第三条件文の使い方
第三条件文は英語の後悔の時制であり、起こらなかった過去の状況を議論し、物事がどのように違っていたかを想像するために使用されます。現在または未来の可能性を扱う他の条件文とは異なり、第三条件文は過去を振り返り、代替の歴史を探求し、逃した機会、誤った決断、選ばれなかった道についての感情を表現します。
if + past perfectの後にwould have + past participleが続く形で形成され、この条件文は過去の時間と非現実性を組み合わせることで、現実から最大限の距離を作り出します。これは反省と後知恵の条件文であり、後悔を表現し、代替の結果を議論し、過去の間違いを分析し、異なる選択がどのように異なる結果につながったかを想像するのに最適です。
第三条件文を感情的に強力にしているのは、反省と学習という人間の経験との結びつきです。逃した機会についての後悔を表現する場合でも、歴史的な出来事がどのように異なって展開したかを議論する場合でも、問題を防ぐことができたかもしれないことを分析する場合でも、あるいは単に代替の人生の道を想像する場合でも、この条件文は過去の行動とその結果との関係を処理するのに役立ちます。

構造
If + past perfect, would have + past participle
Past perfectは非現実的な過去の条件を示し、would have + past participleは非現実的な過去の結果を示します
標準形:
- If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.
- If she had left earlier, she wouldn't have missed the train.
- If we had saved money, we could have bought the house.
- If it hadn't rained, we would have had the picnic.
逆順:
- I would have passed the exam if I had studied harder.
- She wouldn't have missed the train if she had left earlier.
- We could have bought the house if we had saved money.
- We would have had the picnic if it hadn't rained.
代替形式
Could have (能力):
- If I had tried harder, I could have succeeded.
- If she had asked, we could have helped her.
- If they had invested wisely, they could have been rich.
Might have (可能性):
- If he had called, I might have answered.
- If we had hurried, we might have caught the bus.
- If it had been warmer, we might have gone swimming.
Should have (義務):
- If I had known, I should have told you.
- If they had asked, we should have helped.
- If it had been important, you should have called.
避けるべきよくある間違い
✗ "If I would have known, I would have told you."
✓ "If I had known, I would have told you."
if節で'would have'を使用しないでください — past perfect (had known)を使用します
✗ "If she studied harder, she would have passed."
✓ "If she had studied harder, she would have passed."
past perfect (had studied)を使用し、past simple (studied)を使用しないでください
✗ "If we had saved money, we will have bought the house."
✓ "If we had saved money, we would have bought the house."
'will have'を使用しないでください — 過去の非現実的な結果には'would have'を使用します
✗ "If I had more time, I would have finished it."
✓ "If I had had more time, I would have finished it."
非現実的な過去の条件にはpast perfect (had had)を使用し、past simple (had)を使用しないでください

Would have (最も確実):

Might have (不確実):
"If I had left earlier, I might have caught the train." (たぶん、でも確実ではない)
Should have (義務):
"If I had known about the meeting, I should have attended." (義務/責任)
