Past Perfect Continuous vs Past Perfect Simple
Past Perfect ContinuousとPast Perfect Simpleの選択は、過去の活動の期間と継続的な性質を強調したいか、完了と結果に焦点を当てたいかによって決まります。両方の時制は他の過去の出来事の前に何が起こったかを確立しますが、それらの以前の行動の異なる側面を強調します。

Past Perfect Continuous

期間 vs 完了:
Past Perfect Continuous: "She had been painting the house all week."

Past Perfect Simple: "She had painted the house."
→ 完了した結果に焦点
プロセス vs 達成:
Past Perfect Continuous: "He had been writing for three hours."

• "The house was clean because they had tidied up. (tidying achieved cleanliness)"

Past Perfect Simpleのシグナル:
already, just, never, ever
"I had already finished the task."

中断された継続的な行動:
Past Perfect Continuous: "I had been reading when the phone rang."
→ 読書は中断されたときに進行中だった
Past Perfect Simple: "I had read the book before the discussion."
→ 読書は議論の前に完了していた
背景 vs 主要な出来事:
Past Perfect Continuous: "They had been discussing the proposal when the CEO entered."
→ 継続的な背景活動
Past Perfect Simple: "They had discussed the proposal before the CEO entered."
→ 完了した背景出来事
避けるべきよくある間違い
❌ "I had been finishing my homework. (when the task is complete)"
✅ "I had finished my homework."
完了した行動はPast Perfect Simpleを使用
❌ "How many hours had you worked? (asking about duration)"
✅ "How long had you been working?"
期間の質問はPast Perfect Continuousを使用
❌ "She had been knowing him for years. (state verb)"
✅ "She had known him for years."
状態動詞は通常継続形を使わない
