What is the difference between Past Simple and Past Continuous?

When should I use Past Simple?

When should I use Past Continuous?

Use Past Continuous for actions in progress in the past ('I was walking to the shop'), background activities ('She was reading when I called'), interrupted actions, parallel ongoing actions ('While Dad was watching TV, Mum was reading'), and setting scenes or atmosphere in narratives.

How do I use Past Simple and Past Continuous together in stories?

Use Past Continuous for background activities and Past Simple for main events: 'While I was cooking dinner, the phone rang.' The Past Continuous sets the scene (background: was cooking), whilst the Past Simple describes what happened (main event: phone rang). This pattern creates vivid, engaging narratives.
