Future Simple vs Present Continuous (미래 표현)
미래 사건에 대한 Future Simple과 Present Continuous 중 선택은 예측, 약속, 자발적 결정을 하는지, 약속된 계획과 확정된 약속을 설명하는지에 달려 있습니다. 이 구분은 올바른 수준의 확실성과 계획성을 전달하는 데 도움이 됩니다.
Future Simple은 가능성, 결정, 예측을 표현하고, Present Continuous는 이미 이루어진 구체적인 약속을 보여줍니다. 이 차이를 이해하면 적절한 수준의 약속과 확실성으로 미래 의도를 전달하는 데 도움이 됩니다.
Future Simple (will + base verb)
사용 목적:
- 예측과 기대
- 즉흥적인 결정
- 약속과 의무
- 제안과 요청
- 일반적인 미래 사실
예시:
- I think it will rain tomorrow. (prediction)
- I'll help you with that. (spontaneous offer)
- She will call you later. (promise)
- The sun will rise at 6 a.m. (fact)
Present Continuous (am/is/are + -ing)
사용 목적:
- 약속된 계획과 약속
- 확정된 미래 약속
- 이미 조직된 사교 행사
- 고정된 개인 일정
- 준비를 동반한 가까운 미래
예시:
- I'm meeting Sarah at 3 p.m. (arrangement)
- We're flying to Paris next week. (booked)
- The dentist is seeing me tomorrow. (appointment)
- They're having a party on Saturday. (organised)
확실성과 계획성의 수준
즉흥적 vs 계획된:
Future Simple: "I'll visit my parents this weekend."
→ 방금 결정, 구체적인 약속 없음
Present Continuous: "I'm visiting my parents this weekend."
→ 이미 약속됨, 부모님이 기다리고 있음
예측 vs 약속:
Future Simple: "The meeting will be next Tuesday."
→ 언제 일어날지 기대/예측
Present Continuous: "The meeting is next Tuesday."
→ 이미 일정이 잡힘, 다이어리에 기록됨
제안 vs 기존 계획:
Future Simple: "I'll cook dinner tonight."
→ 즉흥적인 제안 또는 방금 내린 결정
Present Continuous: "I'm cooking dinner tonight."
→ 이미 계획됨, 재료 구매 완료
맥락과 준비
Present Continuous는 준비/약속이 필요:
• "We're getting married next month. (venue booked, invitations sent)"
• "I'm starting a new job on Monday. (contract signed, start date confirmed)"
• "They're moving house next week. (removal van booked, boxes packed)"
• "She's having surgery tomorrow. (hospital appointment scheduled)"
→ 구체적인 단계가 이미 취해짐
Future Simple은 즉각적인 결정/반응에 사용:
• "It's cold in here. I'll close the window. (just noticed, deciding now)"
• "The phone's ringing. I'll answer it. (reacting to the moment)"
• "You look tired. I'll make you some tea. (responding to what I see)"
• "I'll help you with those bags. (spontaneous offer)"
→ 대화 중에 결정됨

Future Simple 신호:
probably, maybe, I think, I hope
불확실성 지표
suddenly, immediately, right now
즉흥적인 결정
I promise, I guarantee
약속과 보장
Present Continuous 신호:
tomorrow at 3 p.m., next Tuesday
구체적으로 약속된 시간
We've arranged to..., It's booked
준비가 확인됨
according to the plan/schedule
기존 약속에 따라
피해야 할 흔한 실수
❌ "I will meet you at 7 p.m. tomorrow. (when it's already arranged)"
✅ "I'm meeting you at 7 p.m. tomorrow."
확정된 약속은 Present Continuous를 사용
❌ "I'm helping you. (spontaneous offer in the moment)"
✅ "I'll help you."
즉각적인 결정은 Future Simple을 사용
❌ "It's raining tomorrow. (weather prediction)"
✅ "It will rain tomorrow. OR It's going to rain tomorrow."
날씨 예보는 Present Continuous를 사용하지 않음
