Past Perfect Continuous (Past Perfect Progressive)

Le Past Perfect Continuous montre qu'une action était en cours dans le passé avant une autre action ou moment. Il met l'accent sur la durée ou la continuité de l'activité antérieure.

Nous formons le Past Perfect Continuous avec had been + la forme -ing du verbe. La même forme est utilisée pour tous les sujets (I, you, he, she, it, we, they).

Formation

Forme Affirmative

Formez le Past Perfect Continuous avec had been + verbe-ing. Les contractions ('d) sont courantes en anglais parlé.

Forme Négative

Ajoutez 'not' après 'had' pour former les négations. La contraction 'hadn't' est couramment utilisée.

Questions Oui/Non

Placez 'had' avant le sujet pour former les questions.

Exemples :

  • Had I been reading before you arrived?
  • Had you been walking in the park earlier?
  • Had he been cooking when the guests arrived?
  • Had she been talking on the phone for long?
  • Had it been raining all morning?
  • Had we been playing football before it started raining?
  • Had they been studying English for years before moving?

Questions avec Wh-

Commencez par un mot interrogatif, puis utilisez had + sujet + been + verbe-ing.

Exemples :

  • What had I been doing before you called?
  • Where had you been walking?
  • Why had he been cooking for so long?
  • Who had she been talking to?
  • How long had it been raining?
  • What had we been playing before the rain?
  • How long had they been studying English?

Utilisation

Remarque : Les verbes statiques (comme know, like, believe, want) ne sont généralement pas utilisés dans les formes continues. Ils décrivent des états plutôt que des actions.
