What is the difference between Present Perfect Continuous and Past Continuous?

Present Perfect Continuous (have/has been + -ing) connects past activities to the present, showing duration up to now or recent activities with present evidence, whilst Past Continuous (was/were + -ing) describes actions that were in progress at specific past times with no connection to the present. Present Perfect Continuous links past duration to current situations, whilst Past Continuous describes background activities in past narratives that are disconnected from now.

When should I use Present Perfect Continuous?

Use Present Perfect Continuous for actions continuing up to now ('I have been working here for three years'), recent activities with present evidence ('She has been studying all morning - she's tired now'), duration up to the present, current situations that started in the past, and activities with present results. The key is that the activity has current relevance or continues to the present moment.

When should I use Past Continuous?

Use Past Continuous for actions in progress at specific past times ('I was working there last year'), background to past events, interrupted past actions ('She was studying when I called'), parallel past activities, and temporary past situations. The key is that the time period is finished and has no connection to the present.

How do I know if the time period is finished or continues to the present?

Use Present Perfect Continuous for unfinished time periods that include now ('all day' - day not finished yet, 'this week' - week continues). Use Past Continuous for finished time periods ('yesterday', 'last week', 'in 2020'). Ask yourself: Does the time period continue to now? If yes, use Present Perfect Continuous. If the period is completely in the past, use Past Continuous.
